Reeds and knot density, explained

If you only learn two words before buying a rug, make them reeds and density. Together they tell you how finely a rug is woven, which drives how crisp the pattern looks, how it feels underfoot, and how long it will last. They also explain most of the price difference between two rugs that look similar at a glance.

What "reeds" actually counts

Reeds count the vertical threads (the warp) packed across the width of the rug. More reeds means more threads in the same space, which means finer detail. In our Persian range you'll see three main grades:

• 700 reeds — beautiful classic designs at an accessible price. Ideal for a busy family room that still deserves something special.
• 1200 reeds — the house favourite. Noticeably finer detail, a denser, softer pile, and the grade most of our customers take home.
• 1500 reeds — heirloom grade. Crisp, almost hand-woven detail that reads like embroidery. A statement piece today, an inheritance later.

Density, the second number

Density counts the knots along the rug's length, usually quoted from around 3000 up to 4500. Where reeds set the detail across the rug, density sets it down the rug and controls how solid and hard-wearing the pile feels. Higher density is why a fine rug feels heavy and substantial when you fold a corner in your hand.

Which grade should you buy?

Higher isn't always the right answer. For a high-traffic living room with kids and pets, a 700 or 1200 rug is honest value and will take the wear beautifully. For a formal room, a hallway you want to impress, or a piece you plan to keep for good, the 1500 grade earns its place.
