What size rug does your room need?

More rugs are returned in spirit — bought, laid down, and quietly regretted — for being too small than for any other reason. A rug that floats like a postage stamp in the middle of the floor makes a room feel smaller and unfinished. Getting the size right is the difference between a rug that decorates a room and one that settles it.
The rule that never fails
In a living room, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. That single move ties the furniture into one group and pulls the whole room together. If the budget stretches, having all the legs on the rug looks even more generous.
Sizes that work, by room
- 150×225 cm — a centrepiece under a coffee table, or a bedroom runner beside the bed. A splash of colour without the commitment.
- 200×300 cm — our most-requested size, and the classic living-room fit. Front sofa legs on the rug, room tied together.
- 250×350 cm — generous. The whole seating group sits on the rug with border to spare.
- 300×400 cm — the full-room look, with furniture living entirely on the rug, the way grand rooms were meant to feel.
Dining rooms and hallways
In a dining room, size the rug so the chairs stay on it even when pulled out to sit down. Add about 60 cm beyond the table on every side. In a hallway, a runner should leave an even margin of floor on both sides, roughly 10 to 20 cm, and stop short of any door swing.
When in doubt, size up. A rug that's slightly too big reads as considered; one that's too small always reads as an afterthought.
Bring your measurements into the showroom and we'll lay the real thing out for you, or send them over and we'll tell you which sizes suit. Our Persian range runs all the way to 300×400 cm, with matching runners cut to your hallway. See the collection or read about choosing a grade.
