From Afghanistan to Cleeland Street
Dandy Rugs & Furniture is a family-run rug house in the heart of Dandenong, built by Mohammad on a simple idea: everyone who walks in should feel like a guest, and leave with something made to last.
A better life, and a love of rugs
Mohammad came to Australia from Afghanistan to build a better life for his family. Like a lot of new arrivals in the south-east, he found his feet the honest way. His first job was at Target in Dandenong Plaza, just up the road from where the shop stands today.
On his days off he would wander Dandenong Market, and he kept being pulled back to one corner of it: the rugs. He got to know the trader who ran the little rug shop, and the two became friends. When his friend was ready to move on and offered him the business, Mohammad didn't hesitate. He knew rugs. He comes from a part of the world where they are the heart of every home.
That shop is now Dandy Rugs & Furniture, and Mohammad still greets most customers at the door himself.

How Dandy Rugs came to be
A craft in the blood
Mohammad comes from Afghanistan, where a good rug is not decoration. It is where the family gathers, where guests are honoured, and where the day winds down over tea.
Arriving in Australia
He brought his family to Melbourne in search of a safer, better life, and settled in Dandenong, one of the most gloriously multicultural corners of the country.
On the floor at Target
His first job here was at Target in Dandenong Plaza. In every spare hour, the market across the way became his second home.
A friendship, and a handover
He befriended the trader who owned the market's rug shop. When the chance came to take it on, Mohammad bought the business from his friend and made it his own.
Dandy Rugs & Furniture
What began as a corner of the market is now a proper rug house on Cleeland Street, open seven days, sending rugs to homes in every state of Australia.

We speak your language
Ask around the market and people say the same thing about Dandy Rugs: you are looked after. Mohammad built the shop on hospitality, the kind you find in an Afghan or Persian home, where no one talks business before they've been offered a cup of tea.
He looks after Dandenong's beautifully mixed community in the languages they grew up with, so choosing a rug is never lost in translation.

Three simple promises
Authenticity
Our Persian rugs are woven in Iran, and we are upfront about exactly what you're buying: reeds, density, origin and all.
Honest advice
Tell us your room, your budget and how you live (kids, pets, high traffic) and we'll point you to the right rug, not the dearest one.
Delivery anywhere
Perth to Brisbane, Hobart to Darwin: we ship to every state, and we pack every rug like it's going to family.

Reeds & density, explained simply
Reeds count the threads across a rug's width; density counts the weave along its length. Two numbers, and they tell you almost everything: higher means finer detail, a denser pile, and a longer life.
Everyday elegance
Density 3000. Beautiful classic designs at an accessible price, ideal for busy family rooms that still deserve something special.
AccessibleThe house favourite
Density 3600. Noticeably finer detail and a softer, denser pile that wears beautifully. The grade most of our customers take home.
Most popularHeirloom grade
Density 4500. The finest we carry: crisp, almost hand-woven detail. A statement piece today; an inheritance tomorrow.
